“I want a home that tells a story which has some surprises”
Each building is a story in itself, but also provides a home for many more ongoing stories, of the people who live in them. Everybody loves a good story, especially one with a surprise ending. One of the most powerful effects a building can have is to invite people in with one set of assumptions or expectations, and then to offer them a very new experience once they enter. So it is with this design. The outside consists of an elegant, well composed two story elevation, which relaxes the eyes and invites a sense of visual harmony and comfort.
But then, once through the front door, there is an immediate hint of something unusual, with the view of a light-filled quadrant courtyard at the centre of the house, which provides a spring point for a full curved dining and living space beyond. The result of this is a sense of surprise and delight, which can immediately allow people to engage and integrate with the space in a beautiful way.
The underlying geometry of this design is actually very simple, yet expresses with a rhythmic complexity. It is an exploration of form between the Square, which represents stability, the Golden Rectangle which opens up the overall spatial harmony, and the Quadrant, or quarter circle, which provides the playful flow missing in so many modern houses.
This home would suit a family who are conscious of visually integrating into the neighbourhood style and social context, but who are also not afraid to introduce and express some individuality within the walls of their own inner home space.
